Halloween vs. Hungry Ghost Festival: My Cultural Shock in China

Aug 11,2025 | My Energem

Back home, Halloween is a carnival of fear. We mock death by turning it into plastic decorations, haunted houses, and sexy nurse costumes. But in China, the Hungry Ghost Festival is the opposite—death isn’t entertainment, it’s sacred (and dangerous).

When I asked my Chinese friends why nobody dresses up, they looked at me like I’d suggested wearing a funeral robe to a wedding. One friend said:

"Why would we pretend to be ghosts? Real ghosts are here right now!"

That’s when I started researching—and discovered how Feng Shui and Chinese spiritual beliefs make Halloween-style fun unthinkable during Ghost Month.

Google this: "Why no costumes during Hungry Ghost Festival?" You’ll find no English answers...

Feng Shui Explains Why You Should NEVER Dress as a Ghost

From a Western perspective, wearing a ghost costume is harmless. But in Chinese metaphysics, you are what you pretend to be—and that has real consequences.

1. "Play a Ghost, Become a Ghost" (Bàn Guǐ Biàn Guǐ)

Feng Shui masters warn that imitating a ghost invites ghostly energy into your life.

  • In the West, we think costumes are just fabric and makeup.

  • But in Chinese tradition, clothing carries Qi (energy). Dressing as a wandering spirit could confuse real ghosts—making them think you’re one of them!

My Feng Shui teacher told me a horror story: A man wore a ghost costume during Ghost Month, and later claimed an actual spirit followed him home. Coincidence? Maybe. But would I risk it? No way.

2. The Dead Don’t Want to Be Mocked

In China, ancestors are guardians, not props.

  • Western Halloween often parodies death (e.g., skeleton dances, zombie marches).

  • But during Ghost Festival, spirits are believed to be present and watching. Disrespecting them could bring bad luck, illness, or even hauntings.

A Beijing local told me: "If you dress as a ghost, you might offend one—and they’ll make sure you regret it."

3. Feng Shui Says: "Ghost Month is Already Dangerous Enough!"

During Ghost Month:

  • People avoid swimming (drowning ghosts might pull you under).

  • They don’t whistle at night (it attracts spirits).

  • Some even postpone surgeries or weddings to avoid bad timing.

So why would anyone voluntarily dress like the very thing they’re trying to avoid?

Could China Ever Have Its Own Halloween?

Google Trend Alert: Google searches for "Halloween parties China" rose 450% in 5 years! Yet locals enforce strict boundaries:

Interestingly, cosplay culture is booming in China’s cities. Young people love dressing up—just not as ghosts during Ghost Month!

  • Western Halloween is growing (especially in expat areas).

  • But traditional Chinese still see it as "foreign superstition" compared to their own serious spiritual practices.

A Shanghai bar owner told me:
"We do Halloween parties, but never in August! Older customers would freak out."

Final Thought: A Foreigner’s Lesson in Respect

After years in China, I’ve learned:

  • Halloween = playful fear.

  • Hungry Ghost Festival = sacred fear.

Next time I see someone burning ghost money, I won’t joke about it being "Chinese Halloween." Because here, the spirits aren’t just a fantasy—they’re real, they’re listening, and they don’t like being mocked.

Would you dare to dress up during Ghost Month now?
